Peter Matson

Peter Matson

Peter Matson is a Brooklyn-based musician, producer, DJ, and educator whose wide-ranging career bridges the worlds of underground dance music, live performance, and community-driven education. As the founder, co-leader, and principal producer of the genre-blurring band Underground System, Peter has helped shape a sound that fuses elements of afrobeat, post-punk, disco, and house, earning international acclaim and drawing comparisons to acts like Soulwax and David Byrne.

With a formal music education from The New School for Jazz & Contemporary Music, Peter brings a deep musicality to everything he touches—whether he’s playing multi-instrumental sets at iconic festivals like Eurockéennes de Belfort and Fusion Festival, DJing in intimate Brooklyn clubs, or collaborating with global dance music innovators like Yuksek, Andres, JKriv, Fouk, and Felipe Gordon. His original releases and remixes have landed on esteemed labels such as Bastard Jazz, Razor-N-Tape, Heist Recordings, and Planet E, with club-ready singles and EPs consistently earning support across both underground and mainstream platforms.

Equally passionate about music education, Peter has a long-standing commitment to making music accessible to young creatives. He has taught at CUNY Brooklyn College’s Art Lab, served as a Teaching Artist with Building Beats, and led masterclasses at colleges and universities internationally. His teaching emphasizes hands-on production, ensemble work, and songwriting, often using modern tools and technology to reach students in underserved NYC public schools.

Since joining SoundCollective in 2022, Peter continues to inspire the next generation of musicians by merging real-world experience with an inclusive, forward-thinking teaching philosophy. With a career that seamlessly integrates performance, production, and education, Peter Matson remains one of NYC’s most dynamic and influential creative voices.
