About Course

Studio Essentials: Mastering is a 4-week course that introduces students to the art and science of audio mastering in a real-world production context. You’ll explore essential tools like EQ, compression, imaging, and limiting while learning how to analyze reference tracks, prepare mixdowns for mastering, and apply tasteful loudness and tone shaping for different genres. Students will also explore tools like iZotope Ozone and stock DAW plugins while building a repeatable mastering workflow for client-ready delivery.

Topics & Goals



Mastering Role & Workflow

Define mastering goals, compare to mixing, and outline an end-to-end process.



Signal Chain Fundamentals

Build and order EQ, compression, saturation, imaging, and limiting with intent.



Reference Tracks & Level Matching

Set up references, calibrate listening level, and A/B with matched loudness.



Metering & Loudness Standards

Read LUFS, True Peak, RMS, and crest factor to meet platform targets.



EQ for Tonal Balance

Use broad and surgical moves, linear vs. minimum phase, and mid/side strategies.



Compression & Transient Control

Apply broadband and multiband compression for glue and punch.



Saturation & Stereo Imaging

Add harmonic color and shape width while protecting mono compatibility.



Exporting, Metadata & Delivery

Format for streaming, vinyl, and CD with proper naming, ISRCs, and DDP.
